So many times I am lucky to say. Below is one that really proved it.
When I was 24, I lost the man with whom I had made life plans and we covered eternity, too. He was a beautiful man, a good man, and was my Jolly Scoundrel! It was a construction accident, during which a necklace I bought him was lost. I thought it was forever buried in the hole they dug him out of, too late to save him.
I was nuts, of course, and lucky to have my family. My older sister went out and bought him a brand new, solid gold wrench pendant identical to his with a solid gold chain, which did not match the one buried I had bought him on my college kid budget! The pendant was gold, but not the chain. My heart swelled with love and loss equal to one another that she thought to and did do. She is an Angel.
THREE WEEKS LATER his necklace arrived in the mail and I have it to this day.
On a related note, during a bad stint in Canada (read “Hell’s Tunnels” in blog for fun!) I was walking on the sidewalk towards home when I passed a little 16 year-old twot who lived upstairs from me. She had a puffed heart gold necklace on and it was hanging out the front of her turtleneck shirt. It was like the one the Jolly Scoundrel gave me! Somehow I knew it was mine on sight as I got closer. I stopped her under the guise of politeness and on closer examination I saw without a doubt it WAS mine and this B*TCH was about to die bloodying up the Canadian road I would take to escape across the border after yanking it off her nasty corpse!
You may ask, as she did, how I know it’s mine and it’s because The Jolly Scoundrel bought it for me and it has different designs on the opposite sides. One of a billion ways he was awesome. “Stutter on”, I told her, “while you’re taking that off unharmed, because it’s worth killing you and going to jail for”. She could see the fires of Hell in my eyes as she shakily put it in my hand as she apologized like I gave a damn.
I walked away, to go wash her filth off it, knowing I had averted a murder charge AND a life of haunted hell wondering where it went.
Even now, over 30 years later, those two pendants hang together on the same chain!
